Robert D’Angelillo Speaks to the Bronx Developmental Disabilities Council About Advocacy and Guardianship

On October 3, 2015, Robert D’Angelillo was invited to present at a seminar for parents and family members of children with developmental disabilities who are transitioning to adulthood.  The goal of the presentation was to make the parents aware of the changes in available programs and the legal ramifications when developmentally disabled children turn 18 years of age.  Robert’s presentation focused on the need to have a legal guardian appointed for these new “adults” so the parents maintain the ability to make and assist with medical, personal and financial decisions once New York State deems them adults.  In addition to explaining the steps in the guardianship process, Robert also discussed the importance of establishing different types of “Supplemental Needs Trusts” to protect the child’s assets or inheritance while remaining eligible to receive government benefits.    The presentation to this very interested group was well received and addressed a great deal of their concerns and anxiety as they face new challenges for their families.
